Boat Maintenance Checklist Before Summer
Before a boat goes back in the water for the season, a short set of checks can catch the issues most likely to have developed during winter storage — before they turn into a breakdown on the water.
Engine and fluids
Check oil condition and level, along with fuel — fuel left over winter can degrade and cause starting or running issues. Spark plugs and filters are worth inspecting if it's been a while since the last service.
Battery and electrical
A battery that's sat unused over winter is one of the most common reasons a boat won't start in spring. Test the battery and charging system, and check connections for corrosion.
Cooling system
Confirm the telltale water stream flows properly once the engine is started, and have the impeller checked if it's due — this is a wear item that's easy to overlook until it causes overheating.
Hull, propeller and general condition
A visual check of the hull, propeller and steering catches damage that might have occurred, or gone unnoticed, over winter storage.
