Why Is My Outboard Engine Overheating?
An outboard engine overheats when its cooling system can't move enough water through the engine block. The most common causes are a worn water pump impeller, a blocked water intake, or a faulty thermostat — but the right response either way is the same: stop the engine and have it inspected rather than continuing to run it.
How to tell an outboard is overheating
Most modern outboards have a warning alarm or light, and many reduce power automatically to protect the engine. Older or simpler engines may only show it through a weakened or absent telltale water stream — the small jet of water that should flow from the engine while it's running — or through a noticeable drop in performance.
If you notice a warning light, alarm, or a weak/missing telltale stream, reduce power and head to safety rather than continuing at speed.
The most common causes
A worn water pump impeller is one of the most frequent causes — it's a wear item that degrades gradually with use and needs periodic replacement as part of routine service.
A blocked water intake, sometimes from sand, weed or debris, can restrict water flow even with a healthy impeller.
A faulty thermostat can prevent the engine from regulating temperature correctly, even when water flow itself is fine.
Low coolant or a cooling system leak, on engines with a closed cooling circuit, is a further possibility.
What to do if it happens
Reduce speed and, where safe to do so, stop the engine to let it cool rather than continuing to run it hot — running an overheating engine risks turning a straightforward repair into a more serious one.
Once safely back, avoid restarting and running the engine at length until it's been inspected. A proper diagnostic check will confirm whether the cause is the impeller, the intake, the thermostat, or something else.
